「Here!」 Useful expressions when serving something

Activity 1: Picture Description

Look at the picture and say something about it.

Activity 2: Practice the dialog with your teacher.

At the department store...

Salesperson: May I help you?

Customer: Yes, please. I’m looking for a sweater.

Salesperson: What size are you?

Customer: I’m a medium.

Salesperson: What color would you like?

Customer: I don’t mind the color. Any color is okay for me.

Salesperson: Here. How do you like this one?

Customer: It’s nice. Can I try it on?

Salesperson: Of course. Go ahead. The changing room is over there.

Customer: Thank you!


At the department store...

Salesperson: How does it fit?

Customer: It’s fantastic. I really like it. I’ll take it.

Salesperson: Great! Kindly go to the cashier, and pay over there.

Customer: All right! Thanks for your help.


At the cashier...

Cashier: Next, please!

Customer: Hi, I would like to buy this please.

Cashier: Okay, how would you like to pay?

Customer: Do you take credit cards?

Cashier: Yes, we do.

Customer: Okay, here’s my card.

Cashier: Thank you sir/madam. Here’s your card. Kindly put your signature here.

Customer: Here you go.

Cashier: Thank you! Do you like me to put the receipt in the bag?

Customer: Yes, please do. Thanks.

Cashier: Here you go sir/madam. Enjoy the rest of your day!

Activity 3: Read the common expressions aloud and explain the usage of the expressions.

Activity 4: Role-play

Scenario: A foreign businessman/woman is looking for a pair of pants at the department store. The salesperson assists him/her to get the best pair of pants.

a. First role-play. The student will act as the salesperson and the cashier while the teacher will act as the businessman/woman.

b. Second role-play. Switch roles. The teacher will act as the salesperson and the cashier while the student will act as the businessman/woman.

Note: In the role-play, use as many expressions from Activity 3 as possible.

有花先生:今回はExcuse me. に続いて、よく使える表現の第2段!!ババーン、Here. よ^^

花子:先生、楽しそうですね…(汗)

有花先生:では、Here. はどういう意味でしょうか。 Do you know the meaning?

花子:here「ここ」ですよね? I live here.「ここに済んでいます」とか?

有花先生:そうHere.「ここ」ね。接客の場面では、さらに「こちら」とか「どうぞ」にもなるわ。商品やレシートを渡すときや席に案内するとき、ドリンクメニューはどこか聞かれて指さしながら…など、いろいろな場面で使えるわ。

有花先生:同じ「どうぞ」でもCan I try this on? 「試着してもいいですか?」などと聞かれて、行動を促すときの「どうぞ」はGo ahead. やPlease do. ね。

花子:よく道を聞かれたりするのですが、道案内のときも、Here.「ここ」という感じでも使えますよね?

有花先生:うんうん、 here「ここ」、指させる範囲だったらthere「そこ」 、さらに離れてたら、over there「あそこ」 ね。
