Part 1: Vocabulary words

1. demand verb [dih-mand, -mahnd]

to ask firmly, to require or need

◼ Example: Her boss demanded an explanation for his absences.

2. disturb verb [dih-sturb]

to break up or take attention away, interrupt

◼ Example: The baby’s sleep was disturbed by his brother’s noise. ◻ Note: We also use “disturb” when someone has trouble emotionally or mentally. For example, “The news about the tsunami has disturbed me very much.”

3. hire verb [hahyuhr]

to get the use of by paying money, to give someone a job

◼ Example: The company hired a bus for the anniversary trip.

4. borrow verb [bor-oh, bawr-oh]

to receive something with the promise or understanding of returning or giving it back

◼ Example: May I borrow your English book? I will return it tomorrow.

5. mention verb [men-shuhn]

to speak of or refer to

◼ Example: She mentioned the plan at the last meeting.

6. pretend verb [pri-tend]

To give a false appearance of; to make believe that something is true

◼ Example: He is not a real doctor. He pretends to be a real one!

7. P.M. also p.m. or PM

8. zoo noun [zoo]

a park where living animals are kept and usually shown to the public

◼ Example: I saw lots of wild animals in the zoo.

◼ Example: The best tennis player of our class was picked to join the university tennis team.

10. festival noun [fes-tuh-vuhl]

an occasion or event of public celebration

◼ Example: The Japanese can watch fireworks during the summer festival.
