Part 1: Vocabulary words

1. end noun [end]

the part of an area that lies at the edge; the extreme part lengthwise; the furthermost place or part

◼ Example: Hold both ends of the rope, please.
◻ Note: ‘End’ can also be used as a verb which means to come to an end.

2. event noun [ih-vent]

something that takes place or that happens; an occasion or an activity

◼ Example: The princess’ 18th birthday is one of the most awaited events of the country.
◻ Note: What’s the most special event you’ve ever attended?

3. farm noun [fahrm]

an area of land on which crops or livestock are raised for a living; land or water intended for the raising of animals, fish, plants, etc.

◼ Example: My father went early to our farm to harvest our crops.
◻ Note: ‘Farm’ can also be used as a verb which means to cultivate land or soil.

4. forest noun [fawr-ist, for-]

a large area of land covered with trees and underbrush

◼ Example: There aren’t any forests in deserts.
◻ Note: ‘Forest’ can also be used as a verb which means to cover with trees or convert into a forest.

5. grandmother noun [gran-muhth-er, grand-, gram-]

the mother of your father or your mother; a female ancestor

◼ Example: I will visit my grandmother this week.
◻ Note: How often do you see your grandmother?

6. island noun [ahy-luhnd]

a mass of land surrounded by water but is not large enough to be called a continent; something that is similar to an island because of its isolated or surrounded position

◼ Example: I want to experience an adventure on an island.
◻ Note: ‘Island’ can also be used as a verb which means to make into an island, to place onto an island or to isolate.

7. magazine noun [mag-uh-zeen, mag-uh-zeen]

a periodically issued publication that is usually bound in a paper cover that contains essays, poems, stories, etc. written by many writers and often with photos and drawings specializing in a particular subject or area

◼ Example: Aunt Mae buys a magazine every month. She has a collection of fashion and food magazines.
◻ Note: What kind of magazine is popular in your country?

8. member noun [mem-ber]

a person in a group; a part of a whole; one of a set or a class

◼ Example: They are members of an elite group.
◻ Note: The word ‘member’ can also be an adjective which means being a member or having membership in an organization or association. Are you a member of any organization?

9. message noun [mes-ij]

a communication that contains information, advice , news, requests, etc. that maybe sent through writing, speech or signals

◼ Example: I have to send a birthday message to my friend via e-mail.
◻ Note: How often do you send messages?

10. nature noun [ney-cher]

the existence of a natural world without human beings or civilization

◼ Example: We should take care of our nature.
the inborn character or the basic constitution of a person

◼ Example: He is a greedy person by nature.
◻ Note: What can you do to save nature?
