Part 1: Vocabulary words

1. husband noun [huhz-buhnd]

a man who is married or the male partner in a marriage

◼ Example: Her husband provides well for their family.
◻ Note: Who is the husband of your mother?

2. machine noun [muh-sheen]

an apparatus composed of interconnected parts used to perform some kind of work and usually mechanically, electrically or electronically operated

◼ Example: My mother bought a new washing machine.
◻ Note: Sometimes, machine is also used as a verb which means to make, to prepare, to finish with a machine or with machine tools.

3. paper noun [pey-per]

a sheet made from wood pulp, or any fibrous materials used to bear writing or printing and even for wrapping things, etc.

◼ Example: There were many sheets of paper scattered on the floor.
◻ Note: It can also be used as a verb like in “We papered the bedroom.” It means “We covered the bedroom walls with wallpaper.” It only means to line or cover with paper.

4. President noun [prez-i-duhnt]

the one with the highest executive power of a modern republic; the officer chosen to preside over a meeting or assembly or the chief officer of an organization

◼ Example: The president of the Math Club is the smartest of all the organizational presidents.
◻ Note: President Barack Obama is the president of the United States of America.

5. Question noun [kwes-chuhn]

an interrogative sentence asked to someone to get information in reply

◼ Example: Ask questions if you don’t know what to do.
a problem which can be a matter for investigation or discussion; a subject of arguments

◼ Example: This new policy is still a big question that should be discussed by the school’s officials.

to inquire or simply to ask a question

◼ Example: Don’t just agree. Question his statements as well.
◻ Note: Questions or interrogative sentences end in a question mark (?).

6. Salad noun [sal-uhd]

dish that’s usually cold that consists of veggies such as lettuce, tomatoes and cucumbers also with some toppings like meat, seafood or eggs and covered with a dressing

◼ Example: Salad is good for people who want to lose weight.
◻ Note: Do you like eating salad?

7. Tournament noun [toor-nuh-muhnt, tur-]

A challenge or trial of skill in some game where competitors play a series of contests or matches; a sporting competition

◼ Example: FIFA is the biggest soccer tournament awaited by football fans.
◻ Note: A long time ago, tournaments were ‘medieval martial arts contests’

8. War noun [wawr]

a force of arms conflict between nations or parties within a nation; a state of declared hostility and military operations

◼ Example: There’s been a long-standing cold war between North Korea and South Korea.
◻ Note: This word can also be used as a verb which means to carry on war or to fight.

9. Other adjective [uhth-er]

being the one that’s additional or remaining or not included; different from the one that was mentioned or implied; not the same

◼ Example: There are other people in the room aside from our family.
◻ Note: ‘Other’ can also be used as a pronoun but usually takes the ‘others’ form.
◼ Example: Others in the law profession have quit because of the bad justice system.
It can also take the adverb form which means otherwise or differently and is usually followed by ‘than’.

◼ Example: We can't expect them to do their job well other than by telling them that they will get incentives if they do so.

10. Dear noun [deer]

a loved one or a lovable person

◼ Example: It’s not difficult to be a dear. Just be nice to everyone and smile.

beloved, cherished, loved and precious

◼ Example: She is so dear to everyone’s hearts because she’s the only girl in the family.
interjection
often used in surprise or distress

◼ Example: Oh dear! What happened to your face?!
◻ Note: Name a person dear to you.
