Part 1: Vocabulary words

1. borrow verb [bor-oh, bawr-oh]
to receive something with the promise or understanding of returning or giving it back
Example: May I borrow your English book? I will return it tomorrow.

2. die verb [dahy]
to become dead
Example: My grandmother died at the age of 90.
Note: We also use the verb “die” when we desire something greatly. For example, She was dying to see Brad Pitt in person.

3. improve verb [im-proov]
to make a better quality or condition
Example: Hiro studies English every day to improve his grammar and pronunciation.

4. mean verb [meen]
to be a symbol of; represent
Example: In this song, the flowers and bees mean youth.

5. mind noun [mahynd]
brain, the intelligence or understanding
Example: My seven-year-old son already has the mind of an adult.

6. receive verb [ri-seev]
to take something that was given or offered
Example: Every Christmas, I receive cards from my friends.

7. rent [rent]
money paid for the use of a property that belongs to someone else
Example: The rent for this apartment is eighty thousand yen a month.

8. reply verb [ri-plahy]
to answer (by speech, writing or body language)
Example: Should I reply to this email?

9. allow verb [uh-lou]
to let something happen; to give permission to someone
Example: Smoking is not allowed in this area.

10. bear verb [bair]
to carry from one place to another, to support
Example: If I stand on this table, will it bear my weight?
