Umeboshi, or pickled plum, is usually served as a side dish in meals. It is usually eaten together with rice or onigiri (rice balls). The taste is very sour but it is said to have many health benefits such as helping good digestion, being a natural alkaline source (it neutralizes the acid in our bodies), and helping ease morning sickness and fatigue during pregnancy. It is also a remedy for hangovers (futsukayoi). Like apples, taking umeboshi a day, keeps the doctor away.
