Part 1: Vocabulary words

1. building noun [bil-ding]

a structure with roof and walls, enclosed construction over an area of land used for different kinds of activities such as for living, entertaining, manufacturing, etc.

◼ Example: Sky Tree is the tallest building in Tokyo.
◻ Note: The word ‘building’ is also the present continuous form of ‘build’. For example, “My father is one of the carpenters building my friend’s new house.”

2. college noun [kol-ij]

an institution of higher education that offers degree in liberal arts or science or both

◼ Example: John is studying hard in college.
◻ Note: What would you like to major in college?

3. daughter noun [daw-ter]

an offspring of parents who is female

◼ Example: Jane is really beloved by her parents because she’s the only daughter they have.
◻ Note: How many daughters do your parents have?

4. fair adjective [fair]

without bias, dishonesty and injustice; free from any kind of discrimination

◼ Example: Parents should be fair in treating all their kids. They should treat them with equality and without any bias.
having a fresh and pure quality that gives a pleasing appearance; light in color or light complexion

◼ Example: She looks like a goddess with her fair complexion and glowing skin.
◻ Note: Another common use of the word ‘fair’ is a travelling show or gathering of producers to promote a business or an exhibition.

5. French noun [french]

People, language or characteristics of France, its citizens and its culture

◼ Example: A lot of people want to learn the French language because of its beauty.
◻ Note: The word ‘French’ can also be used as a verb that means to prepare food according to a French method. It also means to prepare the meat for cooking by slicing into strips and pounding it.

6. future noun [fyoo-cher]

time that is yet to come or the time to come hereafter; something that will exist or happen in the time to come

◼ Example: Our future lies on the present.

◼ Example: He seems like he doesn’t have any future plans.
◻ Note: What are your future plans?

7. government noun [guhv-ern-muhnt, ‐er-muhnt]

the process of governing or controlling inhabitants of communities; a governing system or body that has the power to rule over a state or community

◼ Example: Our government is doing well in handling the crisis.
◻ Note: This word is a collective noun.

8. hospital noun [hos-pi-tl]

an institution where people with illness or injury are treated

◼ Example: I went to the hospital because of a stomachache.
◻ Note: What can you see in a hospital?

9. instrument noun [in-struh-muhnt]

a tool used for delicate work; an apparatus for producing musical sounds

◼ Example: I bought some surgical instruments for my Biology project.
◻ Note: What musical instrument can you play?

10. jazz noun [jaz]

a kind of dance music that became popular in the 1920s that has elaborate rhythms; dancing or a dance performed to such music

◼ Example: Jazz music is truly relaxing.
◻ Note: It can also be used as a verb which means to play music in a manner of jazz or to dance to jazz music.
