Part 1: Vocabulary words

1. environment noun [en-vahy-ruhn-muhnt, -vahy-ern-]

the surrounding circumstances or conditions, influences; all the cultural, social or external factors or forces that affect or shape the life of a person or a group of people

◼ Example: The environment is one of the factors that greatly affects a child’s personality.
◼ Note: Which do you prefer, a peaceful environment or an active environment?

2. favor noun [fey-ver]

something that is done or granted out of kindness

◼ Example: Can you do me a favor? Can you drop by Liza’s house and give her this?
a favorable repute; approval

◼ Example: Senatorial candidates are now starting to win favor of the people for the upcoming election.
◼ Note: Have you ever done anyone a favor?

3. fee noun [fee]

payment due for professional services; payment charged for a privilege

◼ Example: After the success of his first album, his talent fee suddenly increased.
◼ Note: What ‘fee’ do you need to pay when enrolling in college?

4. graduation noun [graj-oo-ey-shuhn]

the ceremony for receiving a diploma or academic degree that marks the completion of studies

◼ Example: All senior students are excited for their graduation tomorrow.
◼ Note: When did you have your first graduation?

5. grandparent noun

the father or the mother of one’s parent

◼ Example: I visit my grandparents every week.
◼ Note: Your grandmother and grandfather are your grandparents.

6. homestay noun [hohm-stey]

is a study abroad program or a kind of tourism that allows visitors to rent a room from a local or host family for them to learn more about the lifestyle of the local people

◼ Example: I went on a homestay in New Zealand and my host family was really nice to me.
◼ Note: Do you think going on a homestay is more fun than backpacking?

7. industry noun [in-duh-stree]

refers to the production of any economic goods in a particular field, whether material or service; any business activity

◼ Example: The automobile industry in Japan helps its economy a lot.
◼ Note: ‘Industry’ came from the Latin word ‘industria’ which means ‘diligent activity directed to some purpose’.

8. luck noun [luhk]

good fortune or any force that brings good or ill in someone’s life that shapes circumstances and events

◼ Example: May luck land me this job.
the chance happening of good or bad events

◼ Example: Some scientists’ discoveries were just out of pure luck.
◼ Note: Do you believe in good luck charms?

9. material noun [muh-teer-ee-uhl]

the substance or raw matter from which a thing is made of

◼ Example: The materials for the construction of the house will arrive after lunch.
refers to collected ideas, facts, data or information used to make an integrated work or effort

◼ Example: Start gathering materials as early as now so we can immediately start working on our research.
◼ Note: What materials do you need in making simple art works?

10. mayor noun [mey-er, mair]

the head of a local government who is usually elected; the civic head or chief executive official of a municipality

◼ Example: The new mayor of our city will have his oath taking on Monday.
◼ Note: Is your city headed by a mayor?
